Holiday Giving and Crafting

I can't believe Christmas is in one week!  December seems to just have flown by, and although I've got most of my shopping and crafting completed, there's a few things left on my to-do list, not to mention baking, wrapping... oh my!
In any case, this has been a crafty holiday season for me, in part because of Pinterest.  My love of Pinterest knows no bounds and is both a blessing and a curse, but at this time of year definitely a blessing for all the fantastic ideas and inspiration it provides!
While I can't post any of my finished products yet (I don't want to give wandering eyes of family and friends who may read this the scoop on their gifts!) I can share some of the giving and crafting ideas that motivated me this season.  Don't worry, a full report of my crafting adventures (and mishaps) will appear here as soon as wrappings have been cleared away and gifts have been handed out!  So here are a few of my favorites, check out more by following me on Pinterest!

From Whit and Whistle - love these chalkboard mugs!
I love to personalize things, especially gifts.  These chalkboard mugs seemed like a great way to do just that, and encourage the recipients creative juices to flow - they can mark it up however they like!  Michael's carries the Martha Stewart line, which has a good non-toxic chalkboard paint.

I also love a little glitter, and holidays are the perfect excuse to glitter things up in my opinion!  These sparkly votives are super easy to make, and you just might find some fun ways to add your own flare as you start experimenting, like I did, but more on that to come!
From Namesake Design - DIY sparkly votives
I hope these have provided some inspiration for some of you in need of a little divine intervention on gift giving ideas.  And, if all else fails, just remember .....

Holiday Reading for Party Planning

Happy belated Thanksgiving!  I hope you all had a fantastic holiday and that you're still nibbling away at those yummy leftovers!
As the creator of The Ballerina Birthday, I obviously love a party.  Holiday parties have a special place in my heart as well, since the Christmas season is one of my favorites.  (It's one of the things that inspired me to create our Sugar Plum Party! Have you checked it out yet?!)
I'm sure I inherited my love of the holidays from my Mom, our family has always made a point to dress up our house, meals, crafts, and parties around the holidays.  It's a tradition that I love, and one I'm sure I'll pass on to my own family someday.
I also inherited my love of books from my Mom, she has a huge collection, and she especially loves cookbooks and entertaining books. I've been known to snoop in her collection from time to time, and I've found two new books that I think are great especially at this time of year, with parties and events and gift giving opportunities around every corner.
Pippa Middleton really captured the media's attention by being her sister Kate's Maid of Honor at the oh-so-memorable Royal Wedding last year.  Ever since then I've had a slight fascination with these sisters; they are both so elegant and chic, and as I dove into Pippa's new book, Celebrate, I came to like and respect her even more.  I love that her introduction opens with this:

"It's a bit startling to achieve global recognition (if that's the right word) before the age of thirty, on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom."

Classy, witty, and well-spoken.  I love her!  With years of experience working at her parents business and within the London event planning industry, Pippa offers not only useful tips, observations and ideas on hostessing, but history on events and holidays celebrated in the UK, which I found particularly interesting.  The pages are filled with beautiful photographs as well, taken by David Loftus.

Another great book I've found is Cupcakes and Cashmere.  Inspired by her very successful blog of the same name, Emily Schuman gathered some of her most popular blog posts, some additional in-depth tips, tricks and tutorials on staying organized and getting the most out of each season, and great photographs into her book.  I love that this book offers ideas not only on organization and hosting parties and gatherings, but tips on fun seasonal make-up, and festive wardrobe looks.

If you're looking to host either a grown up holiday party, or a kid-friendly festive gathering, both of these will get your planning wheels turning and inject a good dose of party planning excitement into your process!

My holiday gift and to-do list has been in development since September, and now that it's November, I can feel the buzz of the holidays in the air!

I'm excited to announce The Ballerina Birthday will be a new offering a new holiday themed party for the 2012 Holiday Season: The Sugar Plum Party!  Treat your Sugar Plum and her friends to a festive party that's sure to sparkle and delight!

The Sugar Plum Party will draw its inspiration from the holiday classic story of The Nutcracker.  Have this timeless story read aloud for 10 of your guests, who will be dressed to the nines in our fantastic tutus and dress up items that make our parties so unique.  Party leaders will guide guests through dancing their own version of The Nutcracker, using Tchaikovsky's music and interactive props!  End the afternoon with a special holiday craft that guests take home to remember their special day!

This is a seasonal and limited offer, and one we're confident will make your holiday season magical.  Bookings are limited, but we have a few select weekends still available! Additionally, if you book a  Sugar Plum Party before December 1, receive 15% off the Performance Fee!  We're also extending this offer to any Ballerina Birthday Party!  We can't wait to celebrate the holidays with you!

Serenade

Happy Election Day!  Have you gotten caught up in the whirlwind of all the election madness?  No matter your affiliation, today will be a busy and exciting day, so I wanted to provide a little respite and break from the election grind. So, take a look at this beautiful video of Balanchine's Serenade.  The lovely Ashley Bouder is interviewed, and this ballet just makes me breathe a little easier.  Enjoy!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!  I hope your day is filled with treats, spooks, and a whole lot of fun!  The past few weeks I've been getting in the spirit and creating and crafting some tricky and treaty projects, and today is the perfect day to share them!  Have a fun and safe Halloween!

Welcome guests to your house with a bevy of spiders!
Attach magnets to the backs of plastic spider rings
(take the ring portion off) and you have creepy crawlies
to attach to your door!

Use mini black trees and candy corn for a festive table setting.
I plan on decorating these trees tonight.  Use orange or silver buttons,
mini lights, whatever!

Of course I had to include a tutu!  I added a black flower
to this green and yellow one and it was a hit with my
students, who pretended to be witches brewing spells
in it!

Nureyev: A Life in Dance

The Bay Area can be a Mecca for artists, dancers, musicians and generally the art inclined and enthusiasts.  There is always something art oriented happening in the Bay, and it's fantastic!  I wanted to share some information about an exhibit that's at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.  Rudolf Nureyev: A Life in Dance is a special exhibit running now through February 17th showcasing costumes and photographs from the legendary dancer and choreographer's personal collection.

Costume by Nicholas Giorgiadis for Rudolf Nureyev in the role of Prince Florimond inSleeping Beauty, Teatro alla Scala, Milan, 1966 (left) and costume by Ezio Frigerio and Mauro Pagaono for Rudolf Nureyev in the role of Romeo, Romeo and Juliet, London Ballet Festival, 1977 (right). Collection CNCS/Rudolf Nureyev Foundation. Photographs by Pascal François/CNCS

As well as being an acclaimed dancer, working with some of the greatest ballerinas of all time (Margot Fonteyn among them), Nureyev was a choreographer, director and ballet master as well.  As a performer, he was meticulous about his costumes fit and appearance, and he had an obsession with fabric, decoration, style and line for the costumes of the ballets he choreographed as well.

Visit the de Young website here, or check out the Press Release about the exhibit.  I can't wait to get to see this exhibit soon and will be sure to report back!  If you've already been to see it yourself, I'd love to hear from you and know your thoughts!

Ballerina Halloween Characters

Halloween is just around the corner! Still looking for costume ideas?  Look no further...
I always love asking my students what they plan on being for Halloween.  After a myriad of responses that usually include: mermaids, ballerinas (duh), fairies, witches and Disney characters, I ask them what they think I should be.  They usually ponder for a moment or two, and provide me with a litany of creative responses.  My favorite this year has been a princess zombie.
So I got to thinking about Halloween characters and costumes that could be ballet and dance inspired.  "Ballerina" is a pretty general character to portray, why not spice it up a bit and get more specific if your budding ballerina (or maybe you) are interested in being a creature from the dance world for Halloween.  Here are some ideas for characters and costume ideas too.  Happy Spooking!

Medora from Le Corsaire
Medora is a spunky harem girl in the Ballet Le Corsaire, a la Jasmine from Aladdin.  Set to be sold to a Pasha, Medora and her friend Gulnare embark on a set of adventures with Conrad the pirate and his slave Ali in this ballet.

Viktoria Tereshkina

I love the idea of a yellow tutu and leotard, sparkled up and with a floaty veil or scarf to give the costume an Arabian Nights kind of feel.  Or some baggy pants (you could use ribbons or hair ties to pull the pants in at the ankles and knees) and channel Princess Jasmine.

Coppelia from Coppelia
Click here for the full story on Coppelia.  She's a great option because not only is she a 'ballerina' but a doll as well.  A ballet dress with an apron, and some fun and funky make up will make an easy and cute doll look.

Jewels
Balanchine gave us this gem of a ballet and this is a great option if you have a ballerina on your hands who LOVES a specific color.  Emerald, Ruby and Diamond were the original variations, but think outside the box!  You could also go Lilac Fairy from Sleeping Beauty!

Ariadne from Errand Into The Maze
Wanting to go a little more trick rather than treat? Martha Graham's Errand Into the Maze explores the Greek tale of Ariadne and the Minotaur.  Here is a picture of the traditional costume used.  This could also be a great costume to use make up on, both the face and the body!

Miki Orihara

La Sonnambula
We can again thank Balanchine for another darker character in La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker).  Also an opera, this haunting character floats mystically through her story in a long white nightgown, hair down, with a single candle lighting her way.  It's not only a chilling costume option, but a chillingly beautiful ballet.

Ballet 101

In honor of our 101st blog (don't worry, this is my last celebratory number based blogs until 200... or so), I wanted to offer some information on ballet basics, Ballet 101, if you will.  For those of you who have little ones in ballet and you see all the prancing and spinning and emulating of 'ballerinas', this may shed some light on why we do the crazy things we do in ballet.  Even if you know all the basics, it can be fun to learn some new facts (which I've also included here, with the help of the site abridgeclub.com)

Ballet 101

TutusTutus may seem like an odd thing.  Why on Earth would dancers don an itchy, fluffy skirt that reached to their ankles to dance in?  Good question.  It was actually to portray the ethereal and light otherwordly beings that the Romantic era dancers were playing.  In ballets like Les Sylphides, choreographers wanted dancers to seem like the were just skimming the floor (hence the development of pointe shoes as well) and convince audiences that they really were from another world.  As ballet plots and technique developed, tutus got shorter to show fancier footwork.  Starting with Balanchine, many choreographers ditched the tutus all together to focus the choreography and the dancers more on pure movement rather than costumes.

An example of the clean (and non-tutu) costumes Balanchine preferred

Turn Out: Rotating the legs outwards to resemble a duck is also a quality that many question about ballet.  What purpose does turn out serve?  Well, besides giving students something to work out (check out this great video from a previous blog), turnout allows dancers to move quicker than if they were working from a parallel position.  In the court of Louis the XIV, not only did men's fashions (in that day, men did the majority of theatre dancing) demand them to use turn out (their wide topped boots forced them to turn their legs out when they moved), but theaters in that day sat audiences only on one side, and dancers could really only move side to side, and were not allowed to turn their backs to the members of the audience.

Barre: A horizontal wooden hand rail that runs around the wall of a ballet studio.

Warm-up: Exercises taken at the barre (and sometimes centre on the floor) to stretch, lengthen and loosen the body and muscles and prepare them for the more intensive dancing in the centre including jumps and turns.

Positions of the feet: First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth.  These have been developed and changed over time.  Beginning students usually only work from First, Second and Third.  Fourth and Fifth positions require more control over the turnout muscles, spine and upper body.

Port de bras: Carriage of the arms that coordinate with the positions of the feet.  Positions of the feet and port de bras are the basis for all classical ballet exercises and much choreography.

Plie
: An exercise in which, standing erect and with back straight, you move down and up with
 the bend of the knees.

Releve: A movement in which you rise up high on to the balls of your feet.

Centre: a group of exercises similar to those at the barre but performed in the centre of the room without the support of the barre

Arabesque: A position in which you balance on one leg (or bent leg) with the other
stretched out behind you.

Allegro: An Italian musical term meaning quick and lively. In ballet, allegro steps are completed in fast tempo.

Petit Allegro: Small jumping and turning steps.

Grand Allegro: A combination of large traveling steps and jumps.

Curtsey: A movement by the female dancer where she places one foot behind the other and bends both knees that thanks the instructor at the end of a class, or an audience at the end of a performance.

Bow: A movement by the male dancer where he bends from the waist down that thanks the instructor at the end of a class, or an audience at the end of a performance.  Both curtseys and bows can also be referred to as a Reverence.

Happy 100 Ballerina Birthday!

It's our 100th blog!  Looking back over our past blogs, all the parties, tutus, and glitter and giggles that are found here give me the warm and fuzzies; I just love sharing my love of dance with my students, party clients and you readers, and I'm so glad to have a platform to reach out to all you fellow dance and balletomanes!
So, I figured any milestone deserves a treat, and in this case, I've chosen a cupcake - that is Cupcakes and Conversation via the lovely Ballet News site.  And this is an extra special Cupcakes and Conversation; the interview is with the inspiring Gillian Murphy, currently a guest artist with the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Principal with American Ballet Theatre.  The Cupcakes and Conversation series that Ballet News does is always a wonderful look inside the many artists and companies that contribute amazing things worldwide to the art of dance, and this interview with Ms. Murphy is just delicious.  Below are a few excerpts of the interview - read the full version here.  Enjoy the beautiful photography and interview, and cheers to our 100 posts!

Why ballet ?
“If you have to ask, you wouldn’t understand.” That’s the motto plastered across Harley Davidson shirts around the world regarding why people drive motorcycles. In this case, I imagine anyone reading Cupcakes and Conversation gets it. Ballet is a universal language full of incredible grace, athleticism, and artistry. To be a ballet dancer is a privilege, and to dance is to be exhilarated by the joys of movement. It sounds over-the-top, but the feeling of dancing is larger than life. Ballet is my favorite form of expression, and I love that it is a constant balancing act between control and abandon.

How do you prepare your pointe shoes ?
I sew ribbons and criss-crossed elastic to my Gaynor Mindens, and then I’m ready to go!  They don’t need to be broken in, and they last quite a while, so I like to wear a new or fairly new pair for performances (so they are nice and clean), and then I’ll continue to wear that pair either for other performances or throughout the rehearsal process.

Who inspired you to dance ?
I always loved to dance, but seeing videos of many great ballerinas as a young kid inspired me further. Also, I was truly fortunate to have such a supportive family that allowed me to leave home when I was fourteen in order to pursue dance as a potential career.
What is your best piece of advice ?
Get the best training that you can, and also develop your awareness and perspective outside of the studio. Aside from giving you personal fulfillment, your growth as a person will feed your artistry as a dancer so that you can use the structured language of ballet to express the passion and texture of music and your emotions as an individual and/or character.

Fall for Organization (Ballet Style)!

It's really starting to feel like fall.  Being a Californian, I probably have no real sense of "fall", but by Western standards, it's getting cooler in the mornings and evenings, and a few leaves are starting to whirl around by the occasional blustery wind.  Fall reminds me of many things: back to school, holiday preparations (including The Nutcracker), soups and warm foods, scarves and new shoes.  If you're anything like me, you might have a strong (ok, slightly obsessive) organizational bone in you around the fall season as well.  Maybe it's the influx of activities, projects and holidays on the horizon, but this time of year tends to kick me into organizational mode.  Here are some crafty ballet inspired items to keep you on track, or give you some gift ideas!

Calendars are always a great gift idea, and are easy to find this time of year!  A quick Google search will land you with plenty of options, and customization is easy these days with sites like Zazzle and Shutterfly.  You may even be able to find some vintage options, which I always love.  Nothing like a great old black and white of Fonteyn and Nureyev to get my nostalgia flowing.

Love the two above ideas for organizing a work/study space (thanks Pinterest)!  Cover the drawers and old cans with wrapping paper of your choice (there are many ballet and ballerina paper wrappings out there!) and voila! A dressed up and pretty container for all your papers, pens and accoutrements!  (Another idea: get the kiddos in on it and use butcher paper.  Let them go at it coloring and decorating the paper and they'll be able to see their own creations as the decoration).  Happy Fall, and Happy Organizing Ballet Lovers!

Theme It Up: Party Theme Ideas

I distinctly remember having a Princess Party for my 6th birthday.  My mom made me a fantastically frouffy pink dress, complete with taffeta, pick ups, and pouffy sleeves.  (At least in my mind that's how I remember it, I should look back at those pictures to see if reality matches what's in my mind's eye at all).  My friends dressed up in their finest as well.  I think Megan (fellow balletomane from a young age) had a crown and Sarah (of the afore-blogged Funnies card post) wore Pretty Pretty Princess necklaces and rings.  There's not a doubt in my mind that dressing our best at a young age set up us for success and generally being the fabulous people that we are today.
So, it's really no surprise that themed kids parties are the subject of many a magazine, Pinterest, online articles, etc.  Children love telling you about their favorite things, and once they've found something that makes their little eyes sparkle and you can practically see the excitement ooze out of their ears, they'll waste no time in telling you about it.  ALL about it.  Like for a whole car ride to the supermarket.  And then again in the supermarket.  And on the way home.  : ) But I completely get it; the things that excite and inspire us should get us worked up!  Kids are wonderful at understanding this.  One of the great things about The Ballerina Birthday is that the themes we offer are springboards to help create a wonderfully unique and fun party; so while Ballerina, Fairy and Princess are some of the most common themes that are requested, they're really just a jumping off point to get the imaginative juices flowing!  Here are some examples and ideas of things to consider when choosing a theme:

  • Use a favorite book.  Angelina Ballerina is a favorite, and there's TONS of great and accessible accessories to use.  Pinkalicious and her books are another fun one.  Or, go for a classic like Madeline or Alice in Wonderland.  Incorporate boys as well with stories that both boys and girls like: Where the Wild Things Are, The Hungry Caterpillar, and any Dr. Seuss book.
Angelina Ballerina cookies!

Love this cake by Bunny Cakes!

  • Use the everyday. Children have wide and varied tastes.  Is there a favorite poem or work of art hanging in their bedroom they can't get enough of?  Maybe a song they love to sing?  Currently I'm using "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music in some of my classes.  We tap our toes like raindrops, pretend to grow and bloom like roses, and stretch like kittens (Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens....).  So many elements that could turn into great party ideas... rose cupcakes, face painting whiskers on little faces!
Great idea for a funny/silly themed party.  Have silly dress up
items and a picture station for kids and try serving cupcakes with
silly faces!

  • Take inspiration from the past.  I once did a Beach theme party; the family had recently taken a vacation to a beach town and spent a few days at the many beaches the area offered.  Their daughter couldn't get enough of the beach and wouldn't stop talking about it once they got home.  The mom made a lobster shaped cake, decorated tables with fun and colorful beach pails and toys, and the kids and I pretended to be mermaids, seaweed, pirates and ships!

For a beach or summer themed party popsicles are a great
alternative to cake.  And they're so refreshing!

The sky is the limit!  And if you get stuck or just can't seem to nail down the perfect theme, ask your little one.  I find that they are fountains of knowledge and are only too happy to share their thoughts and desires with you!

Dance on Pinterest

Ok, I know I'm a little late on the bandwagon here, but I just joined Pinterest, and of course, I love it!  I never thought I wouldn't, and my tardiness isn't due to lack of interest or realization that this is a fun, fun thing, more that I'm the type of girl who likes to watch and observe trends from the wings for a bit.  It might be silly, but I guess that's just how I roll when it comes to things like this.
For months now I've observed and enjoyed seeing what my friends have been Pinning.  I've ooh-ed and ahh-ed at the beautiful photography and pretty fashions, giggled at the funny parodies and jokes and pondered the more serious and contemplative quotes and allegories.  And now, I've joined the masses!
Any of you who are dance lovers and have a Pinterest know there is a ton of dance stuff out there, and while I'm still exploring, I wanted to share some of my immediate favorites!

This totally reminds me of me!  Love the interaction going on here!

Also reminds me of teaching and working with my students.  I wonder
if she's a butterfly or a fairy?

Taptastic!  Crazy respect for the artist who had the patience to do this!

Totally wanting to show up to ballet class with this 'do!
I'm so excited to have a new project to work on! (And a little worried actually... taking bets on how many hours per week I can kill on Pinterest.  3...5... do I hear a 7?)  I'm still setting up my profile and getting the lay of Pinterest Land, but follow me!  http://www.pinterest.com/whirlsntwirls is where you can find me, looking forward to sharing all things dance!

Funnies: Dads Doing Good

This month's funny has the added bonus of not just making me giggle, but being for a good cause!  Check out these dancing dads!  These fantastic dudes are fathers of RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) students at Danscentre in Aberdeen, Scotland who learned and performed this piece to raise money for charity.  They ended up raising about $28,500!  Don't worry, although this may be reminiscent of The Full Monty, this is very clean and appropriate choreography : )

As many dads tend to be, this lot are goofy and a bit doofus, but totally lovable!  Cheers to great dads doing great things, and getting their groove on while they do it!

Back To School Goodies!

It's almost heeeeeerrrreeee!  TV commercials and online ads are probably bombarding you with reminders that it is indeed the season for Back To School!  I imagine that the parents are probably more thrilled about this than the kids (see the funny below), and I myself approach the season with a bit of conflict myself... On one hand I'm excited as a student myself to get back into the learning groove, to use my brain to its full potential and attempt to put some of the knowledge back in that inescapably has leaked out over the weeks, months, and years, but on the other hand August still feels so much like summer to me (especially in California), that get I get a bit bummed by the eminence of the end of one of my favorite seasons.  Yet, overall my feelings about Back To School are ones of excitement, and in the spirit of that, I've listed some of the coolest and (in my opinion) must haves for Back To School 2012!

I love someecards...

So if you have some kiddos on hand who are of the Not So Excited about Back To School variety, what better way to welcome them home with a great snack?  Milk and cookies, anybody?  Shop Sweet Lulu has an adorable collection of many great festive things, including these old fashioned milk bottles, which I think make for an adorable (and yummy) snack.  Pictured here are both glass and plastic versions.  Plus, these make great beverage containers for any party you might have coming up in your future!

Babble.com has a neat blog called The Family Kitchen, which is where I found some of the coolest (and weirdest) new lunch bags and boxes.  Lunch boxes were always my favorite acquisition at Back To School time... I'll never forget my purple My Little Pony lunch box.  It would probably be vintage nowadays, I should look for that thing ....

Planetbox's variation on the lunch box

And what would Back To School be without a cute pair of new shoes?  Of course I'm partial to ballet flats, but Old Navy has these cute polka dot lace ups that still keep some of that light summery feeling, which I dig.

So there you have it, some of my faves for Back To School!  Hope the new school year brings you and yours lots of fun, knowledge, friends, and good times!
